mailsafe - managed e-mail virus scanning faq's

Below are a selection of the most commonly and frequently asked questions we receive from our clients. If you have a question that is not covered below, please call our Customer Services on ++44 (0)845 258 1500.

Do we need to be an existing vslnet customer?
No, any company or individual can benefit from mailsafe protection abilities.

Will having my e-mail's scanned slow down delivery?
Depending on file size mailsafe will take as little as a 1 second to process an email.

Why do we need mailsafe when we already use a desktop anti-virus product?
Your desktop solution is only as good as the last definition update and reliant on that company always being the first to market with a working antidote. mailsafe uses three sets of industry leading virus definitions, from three different time zones, which automatically update every 15 minutes 24x7x365. Further to this mailsafe's own heuristic engine endeavours to quarantine all new potential threats from suspicious payloads prior to a working antidote being available.

If an e-mail is infected and quarantined, will mailsafe clean it and forward it on?
No, mailsafe will only quarantine infected mail. On receipt of a written authorisation from the recipient stating that they are aware of the potential consequences and that vslnet will not be held responsible for damage to business systems, quarantined email's can be released for delivery.

How do we know our e-mail's are being scanned?
On both Inbound and Outbound e-mail's there is the choice of having a standard or custom signature placed on as a footer or in addition the subject of the e-mail can be followed by a tag {Virus Scanned}.

What happens if we send or are sent an infected e-mail?
Firstly the e-mail will be quarantined. Secondly for Inbound e-mail's an automatic response will be sent to both the 'Sender' and the 'Recipient' advising them that we have quarantined an infected e-mail and where identifiable details of the the virus will be given. For outbound e-mail from a mailsafe subscriber, an automatic response will be sent purely to the 'Sender. The 'Recipient' will not be alerted, therefore, giving the 'Sender' time to cleanse their PC's, Server or Network.

How much does it cost?
To protect a business with a single PC it can cost as little as 25 pence a day and when licensing, management and cost of rectifying an infection are considered the mailsafe e-mail virus scanning service becomes extremely cost effective.
